Advent on Lake Traunsee: See you before Christmas.

24.08.2026
from Daniela Kontopirakis

Favourite people by your side. Punsch outside the Post am See, markets around the lake and plenty of time for whatever comes up along the way.

Let’s meet up before Christmas.

This one message is bound to pop up in the group chat in December: ‘Shall we meet up before Christmas?’ We say: yes. Friendsmas on Lake Traunsee. A few days away. Having breakfast together, setting off to explore, discovering new things and meeting up again at the Post am See in the evening. A round of curling. Punch by the fire pit. Advent in Traunkirchen. Christmas markets around the lake. Perhaps a trip to Gmunden.

No big plans. Just plenty of time together.

Advent, the Post am See way.

Punch hut. Curling rink. Fire pits. Sometimes it’s just a glass of punch. Sometimes a round of curling suddenly turns into a bit of a competition. And sometimes you’re still out there two hours later.

Wrap up warm. Grab your favourite people. Head out to the post office.
The rest will follow.

Advent around the lake.

There’s also plenty to discover around the post office during Advent.

In Traunkirchen, the Christmas market will take place on 5, 6 and 8 December 2026. Set amongst the monastery, the parish church and the lake, the market brings together regional delicacies, hot drinks and music.

From 5 December, you can explore Traunkirchen at the weekends on the ‘Kripperlroas’, visiting nativity scene after nativity scene – with various stops around the church, monastery and the historic peninsula.

And for anyone who fancies venturing a little further afield in between: the Post am See is a great base from which to discover even more of the Advent season in the Salzkammergut.

In Bad Ischl, the Christmas market awaits in the historic Trinkhalle. Around Lake Wolfgang, the Advent celebrations spread across St Wolfgang, Strobl and St Gilgen – linked by the Advent boat trip. Mondsee, with its basilica and historic town centre, is also well worth a visit.

One day here. The next there.

Choose your Advent adventure.

Next stop: Gmunden.

Gmunden is also quite close by.

And the journey there can be part of the day out in itself. Take the Traunsee ferry across the lake towards Gmunden – with views of the Traunsee included.

Once there, there’s time for a stroll through Gmunden and a visit to the Advent markets, before perhaps heading further up to the Grünberg. The ‘Lichterzauber’ (Magic of Lights) on the Grünberg gives the Advent evening a whole new perspective.

A little town. A little mountain. Plenty of lake in between.

Your Advent. Your way.

What’s so lovely about spending a few days of Advent at Lake Traunsee? There’s no set schedule. Have a long breakfast. Head out whenever you feel like it. Discover an Advent market. Come back when it gets dark outside. Pop into the post office for a glass of mulled wine. Or simply change your plans again in between. Perhaps that’s exactly the best way to catch up with each other before Christmas.

Slow down. Explore. Enjoy.
