Quiet trails, golden forests and a summit that opens to endless views – all just steps away.
Start right at the doorstep
When I find time for a little break in autumn, I prefer to hike up the Fahrnaugupf. The summit is not overcrowded, the view over Lake Traunsee is unique - and best of all, the trail starts right by the Hotel Post am See.
A hire rucksack is waiting in the room for our guests, ready for any adventure. You can order a snack to take away at reception - freshly packed, ideal for on the go.
Misty trails & quiet ridges
The route leads over the Baalstein and the Geißwand - two small but rewarding stopovers. The ground changes: rustling leaves on shady forest paths, narrow ridges on which the autumn mist drifts along like a silent companion, sunny sections with wide views over the gently coloured slopes.
The view of the lake opens up again and again - sometimes only dimly through a veil of mist, sometimes in clear light. You can't help but stop at these moments.
For me, this is the perfect mix of movement and tranquillity. A trail that clears the mind, carries the scent of autumn, and invites you to slow down.
At the top
At the top, at 1,239 metres, the great reward awaits: a panorama that is second to none. The Salzkammergut stretches out like a painting - the Traunsee is deep blue, the mountains in soft light. Up here, there is space to take a deep breath. I like to take my time, sit down and let my gaze wander. No phone, no noise - just the view.
A Tasty Descent
Depending on the route, the descent leads via the Hochsteinalm, a real highlight for many hikers.
The Alm is located at 907 metres above Lake Traunsee and is known for its friendly atmosphere, the many animal enclosures along the way and, of course, the inn itself.
Specialities of highland beef and lamb are served, a classic roast in the Rein - and not to forget: the legendary Pofesen.
Inside it's cosy, outside there are wooden tables with a view of the Höllengebirge, Totes Gebirge and of course the lake.
